Jeweler Comes Home to Change GR Jewelry Market
By ERIN L’HOTTA of the Advance Newspapers

Trent Almassian, owner of Almassian Jewelers, said he has “diamond dust in his blood.” His love for diamonds goes back three generations when his grandfather Albert Almassian exported rough diamonds from Africa to diamond cutters in Antwerp. His mother Judy also owned a local jewelry store, Gold N’ Such, in Kentwood, for several years.

Almassian and his wife Shannon are now continuing the family tradition. June 7 marked the expansion of Grand Rapid’s jewelry market as Almassian Jewelry opened on 1144 E. Paris Ave.

Almassian and his wife have a combined 23 years of national jewelry market experience. Almassian graduated from East Kentwood High School in 1993 and from the Gemological Institute of America in 1998, receiving the highest degree available in the jewelry industry. Almassian worked for Tiffany & Co., while Shannon worked for a nationally known jewelry designer and then returned to the GIA as a resident graduate gemologist instructor. Shannon also has contacts that link Almassian Jewelers with world-renowned Swiss watches.

After the Almassians relocated to Grand Rapids in 2003, they studied the local jewelry market. They said the opening of their new store provides jewelry shoppers with “unique pieces that were previously unavailable in the regional market.”

“Some of the designers I have exclusively,” Almassian said. “I have Oliva custom cut stones manufactured out of Israel. No one on this side of the state has it.”
He and his wife returned to Ada after several years of being away in hopes of opening a jewelry store.

“It’s always been my intention to come back and have a store in Grand Rapids,” Almassian said.

Almassian isn’t the only one glad he is back. He said he’s gotten visits from some of his high school teachers at the store.

Almassian said he believes that the opening of their jewelry store will bring a “new era on the Grand Rapids jewelry landscape, one that is marked by rapidly expanding city, which is growing in size, as well as sophistication.”
Almassian said business at the store has been “terrific considering the season” since opening.

“People have been coming in,” he said. “I just sold a diamond engagement ring the other day and there’s more engagement rings lined up.”
